Ideas from books, in plain words

Useful ideas from good business books, explained in everyday language and applied to Indian traders, dealers, manufacturers and new-product founders.

Some business books are worth reading slowly. This section picks out ideas from them, explains each one in plain words, says which levels and sub-levels of the ladder it matters to most, and works through a made-up Indian example in rupees.

How we write these. The ideas belong to the books’ authors and are credited to them; the words and the examples are ours. We do not copy the books’ text. We attribute an idea only when we can check it against the authors’ own published columns or reliable summaries of the book, and each page lists the sources we used. Every number in an example is labelled Hypothetical: it is there to show the arithmetic, not to report a fact. Read the books themselves for the full argument and the authors’ own stories.

More books will be added over time.
